Dora x Steele Pups Week 3

Puppy Play Time

Puppy Play Time

The pups are now three weeks old. Wow. They seem to change and of course, grow everyday. They are quickly out-growing the whelping box. I’ve had them out a few times and they love to explore the puppy room. I have to get a few things in order and then I will be able to let them come and go from the box and into the rest of the room.

They are playing, barking, running even! So stinking cute! Oh, and speaking of stinking…

Uh…

Yep, they can get a little stinky.

But, they are too cute for it to matter.

Much.

Mack (left) Mohawk (right)

The pups tremendously enjoyed their first meal of puppy mash. This is a mixture of puppy kibble soaked it warm water, then I put it in the blender with goat’s milk and whole plain yogurt. Puppies absolutely love this! At first it is quite thin in consistency, then as time goes on, I use less water, less goat’s milk and yogurt, and by the time they are 5-6 weeks old, they are eating dry kibble and sometimes some good, raw burger with it.

First meal!

First meal!

They just dive in.

They just dive in.

The pups are so funny when they have their first bowl of mash.

They lick and cry.

Stand in it.

Walk in it.

Lay in it.

They go crazy over it!

And it isn’t like they are starving or anything.

Just look at them—nice, plump healthy puppies.

Cleaned the dish!

Cleaned the dish!

In a few minutes, they had eaten it all.

Cleaned house.

Think they liked it?

Messy Gwinn

Messy Gwinn

Now they are a mess! Covered in puppy mash.

Like messy, messy Gwinn.

Mohawk

And Mohawk.

Clean Up

Clean Up

Then they get to the business of cleaning one another up.

So cute.

They clean a little, then doze off with full bellies.

Then wake up and clean up some more.

Momma, Dora, takes care of the rest.

They have received their second deworming already and many, many nail trims! Their nails grow very quickly and are very sharp. I can’t imagine what those razor-sharp nails feel like to poor Dora. So, I keep them clipped as much as possible.

The amount of puppy laundry has doubled over the past week. The whelping box gets changed twice a day and today, I introduced newspapers to one side of the box—the side of the box they already have been using to “go.” I like to keep making the paper area smaller and smaller. They learn quickly and go on the paper. I’ll cover an area of the floor outside the box as soon as I finish the room. I have to find an alternative heat source and then, I’ll be all set to let them have run of the room (it is a small room).

They are getting cuter everyday and can climb out of the whelping box with the single slat in, so I had to put the second in (my son Graham’s genius idea). But, Dora is not a jumper and she wouldn’t jump into the box. So, I made a step for her to get in. She does jump out just fine.

I realized this week this house is very quiet! That is great for me, but not for puppies. I like the puppies to be around noise. They get used to hearing all the different sounds and are not bothered by it. So, I picked up a stupid radio at the local store. There isn’t much I am able to get on the radio, though. Only AM stations that fade in and out, but it is something for now. I am going to return it. It really is the worst piece of crap I’ve ever seen.

Which led me to fall off the deep end and order satellite TV service. Some sort of “super-deal” flyer came in the mail yesterday. I figured it was just a ploy and there would be some “catch.” I called. No catch. Well, that’s not actually true. I do have to commit for 2 years. UGH. And of course the price increases after the first year. I had a weak moment, but really, really need it for the puppies. Looks like I’ll have satellite TV service tomorrow! Geesh. That was fast. Okay. I don’t even have a TV! Some time I’ll try to get one so I can have it on the Outdoor Channel for the puppies. All our puppies have grown up listening to the Outdoor Channel. Seriously. It introduces them to shooting. Or so I think it does. It certainly can’t hurt. :)

I am kinda sad and disappointed in myself that I caved and ordered TV service.

It’s just for the good of the puppies, though.

Anyway. Here are the latest puppy photos:

You know the one.

Works day and night without pay.

Just ’cause they love me or love the dogs?

Think that will ever happen?

me neither. but i am an optimist at heart. so i haven’t given up yet.

It was a gorgeous sunset.

On a frigid January eve in the UP.

The photos (or the photographer more like it) just doesn’t seem to capture the real beauty.

But I tried.

That’s all for now.

Random Stuff

I don’t seem to have much focus today. There are a million things spinning in my head–ideas, projects, inventions–but I can’t seem to focus on just one. So, here are some random photos from our wee little corner of the world.

Addison (Shay x Brier)

Addison (Shay x Brier)

I loved this shot of Addie.

She is so agile.

And beautiful.

And an amazing bird dog, in case I haven’t mentioned it.

And she was bred to Steele.

So, we are expecting a fantastic litter in March.

Mia

Mia (Jenna x Steele 2010 litter)

Oh my gosh, this is so funny.

Mia was watching the tweetie-birds on the deck.

Favorite tool.

And this is my favorite yard tool.

It keeps my yard free of yucky things…

Favorite tool in use.

Favorite tool in use.

And that is one of the yucky things it keeps my yard free of.

Holds a lot of yucky.

Holds a lot of yucky.

And here, you see, it can hold a lot of yucky things.

I just wish it had a mind of its own and walked around and cleaned all the cr*p up without my help!

Really cute puppies

And after all of the chores (there are lots of those here everyday). I was starving.

So I cooked.

Rosie (Raini) Leaves For Her New Home

Are you ready, girl?

Are you ready, girl?

It was a busy few days of preparations getting everything ready for Raini (now Rosie) to make the journey to her new home. Got the crate (which does not always prove to be so easy depending on where in the world you live), decided that crate was too small (her head just touched the top of the inside while sitting and that’s great in my opinion, but not in the airline’s), so went around the world to find a larger one, found my new veterinarian (I think, but I don’t ever think I’ll find one I trust as much as Dr. Fulcomer in PA) to get the health certificate, all paperwork ready, crate pad, food, rescheduled the flight because the temperatures were too cold. Finally the big day arrived!

January 16th, 2012

January 16th, 2012

After the chores, and feeding and letting all the other dogs out for their morning run, then a quick change out of the kennel clothes and boots, and change the new puppy’s whelping box, let Dora, Kea, and Rosie out after their breakfast, and I check the temperature forecast (it was going to be close, but said it would be above the minimum by her flight time), I load the crate, paperwork, food, etc., and Rosie and I were off to Austin Straubel International Airport in Green Bay, WI.

Are you ready, Rosie?

Off to Green Bay

Off to Green Bay

Off we go!

Not that it’s that far. It’s only about an hour and 45 minutes. I just don’t know this area all that well, yet. But, I’ve already made the trip to Green Bay several times and it is a breeze.

:)

Rosie is an angel. Completely at ease and a wonderful traveling companion. I had decided she would ride up front with me, instead of in the back in the crate.

:)

Rosie snoozing...

Rosie snoozing...

See. Having a mid-morning snooze on the way to the airport.

She was supposed to keep me awake.

I put all of my co-pilots to sleep with my driving.

I hope that’s a good thing.

Austin Straubel International airport, Green Bay, WI

Austin Straubel International airport, Green Bay, WI

And we arrive at Austin Straubel International Airport without a hitch. There was traffic, but it is nothing in comparison to the drive I am accustomed to when going to Pittsburgh International.  This airport is much smaller. Photo above is not from yesterday! I just forgot to take one and nabbed this one off the ‘net.

So, I get the crate into the airport first, then go back out and bring Rosie and all of the paperwork in. The very nice folks at American Airlines tell me it is going to be too cold to make the 11:15 flight. Okay. Then, they also tell me the crate I have is too big and I need to go find the next size down. Good thing we have about 3 hours to do that!

So, back into the truck with Rosie and everything to go search for that #400 crate. The GPS’s these days have that great feature where you can search for stores (among other things). Off we go exploring Green Bay to find the right crate! Which was no easy task. I found smaller and the size I already had. It took me most of 2 hours to find it. Hooray–found it! At a pet store. And, crates aren’t a bargain at a pet store. But, I found it.

Rosie was an angel the entire time, while I went in and out of stores, searching the GPS for another one to try, drive to it, then in and back out. She would be watching for me as I came back out of every store. Awe… What a good girl. She deserved lunch and a run!

So, we had a great lunch and I found a bike path had took her for a run.

Then back to the airport. Put the crate together. Get it and her inside. And we get her booked and checked in.

Patiently waiting....

Patiently waiting....

And Rosie was a perfect girl. As a very long line formed behind us and adults and children all cooed and sweet-talked her and commented on how beautiful and good she was…

She is off!

She is off!

And then they took her away. And there wasn’t a dry eye in the place!

Good bye sweet Rosie, you will have a great life with your new family.

::sniff, sniff::

I am terrible at this stuff.

I always wonder if they think I didn’t love them…

Stop it.

Okay, then I made the drive back home and tracked her flights (of course she had to go thru Chicago O’Hare).

Her new family waiting on the other side–and full of anticipation.

We tracked her the entire time and texted back and forth…

The flight arrived.

Then the awful wait until they brought her to them.

And, finally, they got her!

Let Me Out! Who Are You?

Let Me Out! Who Are You?

And, Rosie was completely fine and dry and safe–and it looks like she is chewing on her chewy! :)

And the new family is thrilled.

And Rosie is doing just fine.

Kisses for her new Dad!

Kisses for her new Dad!

A little uncertain of things.

But, kisses for her new dad!

:)

Rosie in her new home.

Rosie in her new home.

She ate this morning and gets to go for a run at a hunt club today!

And her sister Kea, still here with me, looked for Rosie everywhere last night.

She kept going outside, then would want right back in (Kea never comes right back in).

She kept going in Rosie’s crate and laying down.

Kea slept with me last night. :)

It was a good excuse, right?

We both miss Rosie.

Kea

Kea

So, see, I know I can’t keep them all. And everyone else decided the one I would keep (the last one left)!

And all is well and Rosie is in a fantastic loving, hunting home where she will receive tons of attention and hunting time.

And it doesn’t get any better than that, folks!

Pup Update – Dutch (Elias: Lady Bird x Ike)

Thought I better start trying to catch up and post some of the photos sent in by folks of their LML pups. I’ll be posting many over the next few weeks. :)

This is Dutch (litter name, Elias, out of Lady Bird x Ike. Whelped 5/20/2011):

Dutch is owned by Nick Schilling of PA. Nick also reports Dutch is doing very well. :)

Lehman’s Cast Iron Recipe Contest

Okay, I know this doesn’t have anything to do with my amazing bird dogs, but in the spirit of hunting upland game (or hunting any game for that matter), and cooking it in the best tasting and most healthy way possible, I cook everything in Cast Iron. I posted what I made yesterday and today, was forwarded an announcement for Lehman’s Cast Iron recipe contest! Nice. Maybe I’ll win and get the $100 gift card and put it toward that $5,000 stove I so want. Or not. But it will be fun anyway.

Click on the image for all the details, then enter your Cast Iron recipe and good luck! Come on David, you need to enter that amazing Corn Bread recipe. :)

At Least It Gets Cold Here

January 13th, 2012

January 13th, 2012

Apparently living in the  “Banana Belt” of the Upper Peninsula could truly mean we won’t get much snow here. And that really is a blessing when I put aside my childish fantasy of a snow-covered world…and igloos that my brother, sister, and I built… and sled-riding… and angels… and snow shoeing… Less snow means less work. Easier on me. I should just take the gift and say thanks! And so, thanks to Hammill and Gustafson and to God for leading us here!

And then, after reading things like this:

Weather Report

Weather Report

I should be truly grateful–I mean, 2 feet of snow in 24 hours is a lot, eh? And, I am. Grateful. You can see by the photo out my front door, that certainly didn’t happen here. But, I did get some snow. And some is better than none. And some is probably better than 2 feet! And, if I really want to play in 2 feet of snow, I only have to drive north about an hour. So, that’s great. Convenient, too. I know, right?

At least it does get cold here or I really would have to consider moving. Like back to PA, where Hubby is getting hammered with snow today. He called to brag about it, too. Jerk. Ha Ha Ha. Very funny, darling.

It does get cold here.

It does get cold here.

But, at least it does get cold here.

And it is.

A bit cold here.

I like cold much better than warm.

Which is why I’ve never gone to Georgia or Texas quail hunting. Too warm for me.

Gale

Gale

As said, the dogs don’t mind the cold.

Gale likes her apples frozen.

Even on a cold day.

Luka

And Luka thinks it’s a blast.

Rocco, Doc, and Gale

And so do Rocco, Doc, and Gale.

Midge, Addie, Nashua, and Mia

Midge, Addie, Nashua, and Mia

And Addie, Nashua, and Mia had a blast.

Midge is always trying to steal the show.

Today, though, she was just trying to get into the kennel with Steele. Her choice of male companionship today (She is in heat). NO, I say. Not this time. Go cool yourself off in the snow. In the parts where the snow is deep because of the drifts.

:)

Luke

Luke

Luke doesn’t mind at all, of course.

He really prefers the cold like I do.

Rue

Rue

Rue likes frozen apples, too.

Kea eating my slipper

Kea eating my slipper

Kea and Rosie don’t mind the cold either. After an hour and a half, I had to go outside and make them come in. Kea shows her dislike of my cruel act of bringing her in out of the cold, by snatching a slipper. Off the dresser no less.

Kea and a new treat.

Kea and a new treat.

Bribery was in order to win back my slipper and her affection.

Rosie and a new bone.

Rosie and a new bone.

I thought a cold wintery day deserved some new treats.

They have been happy (mostly) for hours.

Except, of course, when they decide that what the other has must taste better than the one they have and play their games of stalking and thievery, then run, chase, and wrestle.

Kids!

:)

New toys

New toys

And it was time to introduce some toys to the wee pups.

You can tell how excited they are, eh? Come on, puppies, play with the toys… please… soon enough… soon enough…

Enjoying the puppy bed.

Enjoying the puppy bed.

At least some are starting to use the puppy bed.

For sleeping and not peeing. I hope.

:)

Off to Rosie’s appointment at the vet to get a health certificate so she can fly to her new home Sunday!

It will be soooo weird without her here! :(

This is really hard.

Have a great day wherever you are in the world and hug your Llewellin tonight.

Dora x Steele Pups Week 2

Puppy feet

Puppy feet

Finally, I was able to scrounge up enough photos. I found my good camera and changed the lens and it seems to be focusing better. I still have the dreaded issue of getting the photos off this camera, but finally got it done.

The pups are doing fantastic. All are looking great and gaining weight. They are so cute walking around and really are starting to let Dora know when they are hungry–they can make the cutest darn 2-week old puppy howls ever!

Enjoy the photos.

Winter Has Returned, Venison for Breakfast, and Puppy Chewing Tips

Dora woke me around 5:15 am. So, she, Kea, Rosie, and I hurried to the door–I couldn’t wait to see if it had snowed. I am so like a little kid when it comes to snow. It was a huge, depressing, kick-me-again, let-down to see there wasn’t any. Bummer.

I stoked the wood stove, put the peculator on, went in and picked up each of the new puppies, gave them some attention and lovin’s and then crawled back into bed and pulled the covers over my head. The girls joined me. Bliss. Pure bliss. We cuddled for a bit…sort of.. I tried to cuddle, Kea and Rosie were being jealous of one-another and “mouthing,” and Dora growling a bit at them because she really wanted to cuddle and nap without puppies bugging her… they settled and we all dozed for a few lovely minutes listening to the wind howl. I could have stayed there all day. But, after a little while, it was time to get up and get this show on the road. Too much to do…

Layers of long johns would be necessary this morning. And my favorite turtleneck sweater because the wind is howling. The thermometer says 22°F, but the widget on my cell phone reports 10°F with the wind-chill. I said I liked the cold, right? So, two pairs of Smart Wools (makes my boots fit better), the rabbit fur-lined hat because I didn’t want my Kromer to blow off (because I got it too big), my have-to-have wool-scarf, the long cowboy duster with wool liner, Muck boots, and Swedish mittens my Dad just sent me (thanks, Dad!), buckets of water ready, food ready, and out I go to take care of my Llewellin pack.

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

It actually had started to snow! (calls for a whole-body wag!!!) Woot-woot! It was mostly blowing side ways more than down. Still, the field behind the barn was now white. Excellent, things were looking up!

The dogs had a great romp, and a nice, warm breakfast. And, here we go again–Lady Bird is in heat, now! It never fails—they all come in at the same time. Mia is finally coming out of hers, but Luke still keeps visiting her and acting like he’s super cool studly dude (which he absolutely is). All the girls love him. He is such a cool dog and is always sweet and seems to actually court the gals. He plays with them, lays with them… he’s such a gentleman about it, instead of wild-man maniac.

Addie is coming out of her heat and eagerly returned to her kennel this morning, instead of flirting with Luke, Ike, and Steele, or standing at the fence hailing the coyotes and contemplating running off with them.

The young pack needs more time out to run. So we do. I work with them a while, then let them explore on their own a bit while I see if putting some ashes from the wood stove on the driveway might help with the ice that is now practically completely covering it. They insist on trying to help me. The ashes were not hot–I took them out of the stove Saturday, I think, but Llewellins helping me apply ashes to the solid-ice covered driveway was certainly a treat. We were all slipping and sliding. Too funny. They have to see what I am doing all the time. Love that. My pals.

Back inside and Kea and Rosie are just hanging out in their crates, looking so stinking cute. Just laying there patiently waiting for me. They easily took to their crates again. And even go in for a nap on their own account. It hasn’t been any problem at all. I always try to make crate training as fun and rewarding for the pups as possible (yes, I use treats when I am teaching them). I give them their breakfast and out they go to play and stalk pigeons again.

Kea

Kea

The snow and wind have picked up and it is frigid out there. They could care less and have a grand time playing.

Puppies and Chewing

Llewellins are chewers. Or at least it seems many of mine are. Especially pups. And some more so than others. I’ve had Llewellins that didn’t chew at all, but others that are very orally fixated. It’s best to provide them with lots of things they are allowed chew on, put up everything you don’t want them to chew on (like the piece of wood Rosie has!), and when/if you catch them in the act of chewing on something they shouldn’t, first try to get them to bring you the item–don’t chase them to get it, they love to be chased and it won’t work. When they bring it to you, praise them and give them something they are allowed to chew. This works very well for me. I don’t really bother scolding much. I might give an “ahhh!” when they approach something I know they are going to try to chew on, but really, just watching a pup and keeping them busy with things they are allowed does the trick.

You must understand that a dog needs to chew. Rather it be to alleviate painful teething or even more painful boredom, you need to understand them and their needs. Give them a beef knuckle bone and they—and you—will be very happy. I also love to give them strips of thick leather—like from old leather collars or leads with any hardware cut off. Toys will just get eaten in a matter of days. Very few make it longer than a week and you must throw it away at the first signs of fraying, tearing, or bits coming off of a rubber toy. For instance, I just bought about $40 in toys last Friday. Dora immediately “de-squeakerd” the two Angry Bird toys. The pups didn’t even get a chance with them. The bird toy with a rope on it is surviving. The toy bone, I had to throw away after two days. I know better. Save your money on the junk toys and get a variety of bones or try to find some old leather harnesses, etc.

I don’t recommend letting them have an old pair of shoes–why can they have that pair and not your expensive ones? That never made sense to me. I never ever give them socks with knots tied in them either, for the same reason and if a dog swallows a sock it is death or a very expensive surgery if caught in time to remove it from their intestines. I also do not like stuffed animals. My dogs just de-stuff them quite quickly and the stuffing can also be deadly to a dog’s intestines. Some rope toys are okay, but keep an eye on them for fraying and throw them away at the first signs. Kong toys definitely stand the test of time with older pups.

So try lots of different shapes and textures, rotate them often so pup thinks he has a new toy and keep children’s toys, socks, electrical cords, etc., out of reach. Understand their need to chew, provide good options, and you just might survive it! :)

Venison for Breakfast

With everyone taken care of, I decided to make a little breakfast for myself. Wish I had a propane stove or an old cook stove. I absolutely can’t wait to get one of these:

My Dream Stove

My Dream Stove in the Lehman's Catalog

Someday maybe, eh?

Instead, I turned on the electric stove (there goes the electric bill) and grab my trusty cast iron skillets and whipped up some delicious venison tenderloin sauteed in a bit of extra-virgin olive oil mixed with some coconut oil and some beautiful yellow, red, and green peppers, and onions. Wish I had some mushrooms. I added kosher salt, pepper, and lots of garlic cloves. :)

Venison Tenderloin

Venison Tenderloin

There is nothing quite as delicious as venison tenderloins cooked a cast iron skillet.

I decided I better use up some purple cabbage (purple cabbage is very high in Vitamin C, by the way) and got that going in another pan…

Sauteed Purple Cabbage with carmelized onions

Sauteed Purple Cabbage with Caramelized Onions

I caramelized some onions and sauteed the cabbage in coconut oil. This is also really good with red wine added. But, I didn’t have any and I don’t want the sugar from the wine anyway. A hefty pinch of kosher salt, pepper, and a smidgen of Dijon mustard and about 15 minutes later, I had a smashing breakfast. Yep, breakfast.

I can’t seem to learn how to cook for one so I will have enough left-over for a week! This was absolutely delicious and very satisfying on a cold, blustery (I just love that word–blustery) day.

Finally getting white again!

Finally getting white again!

Off to work, now. But I will be finishing posting the new, two-week photos of the Dora x Steele litter, some training articles, and the calendar is almost ready to unveil!

Dora x Steele Two-Week-Old Puppy Pictures!

It took most of the day fooling with the cameras, but I was able to get new photos of the pups–finally!

As you can see, all of the cutie-patooties have their eyes open and are up walking around and most of them very well at that. They are two weeks old tonight. :)
